The DEWALT 13-inch Three Knife, Two Speed Thickness Planer (DW735X) is a serious upgrade for any woodshop. Powered by a 15-amp, 20,000-RPM motor that drives a 10,000-RPM cutterhead, it faces wide boards with ease. The three-knife cutterhead lasts 30% longer than standard two-knife designs, and the two-speed gearbox lets you choose between fast material removal and a smoother finish. The DW735X also features fan-assisted chip ejection, a rigid cast-aluminum base, and an automatic carriage lock that minimizes snipe.
Snipe—the slight dip at the beginning and end of a board—is a common planer issue. The DW735X reduces it with an automatic carriage lock that engages during feeding. For best results, keep the infeed and outfeed tables aligned, use sharp knives, and consider feeding a sacrificial board behind your workpiece. The included extra set of knives lets you rotate or replace blades quickly.
Switch between 96 and 179 cuts per inch (CPI). Use 96 CPI for fast stock removal and 179 CPI for a finish close to sanded quality. This gives you control over surface finish and feed rate without changing blades.
15-Amp, 20,000-RPM motor powers through hardwoods and wide stock.
Three-knife cutterhead delivers 30% longer knife life and quick changes.
Two feed speeds—96/179 CPI—balance speed and finish.
Automatic carriage lock reduces snipe for cleaner boards.
Fan-assisted chip ejection throws chips out and keeps the cutterhead clear.

Snipe happens when the outfeed table is slightly lower than the cutterhead, or when the carriage moves during feeding. The DW735X's automatic carriage lock prevents most of it. For perfect results, set the outfeed table just a hair above the cutterhead and use sharp knives. You can also joint boards before planing to eliminate twist.
The automatic carriage lock already reduces snipe. To iron it out further, align the infeed/outfeed tables exactly with the cutterhead, use sharp knives, and feed a scrap piece both before and after your workpiece.
Yes, it comes with one spare set of three standard HSS knives.
Absolutely. The 15-Amp motor handles maple, oak, and walnut. Use slower feed speed and lighter cuts to avoid tear-out.
96 cuts per inch is faster and more aggressive; 179 cuts per inch produces a smoother surface with slower feed.
No, it runs on standard 120V household current, but a 15-amp circuit is recommended.

Planed smooth boards.
This planer is powerful. It made my old wood look new.
I've been woodworking for 30 years and this is the best planer I've owned. The three-knife cutterhead leaves a glass-smooth finish. The two feed speeds are great for different situations. It handles 13-inch wide boards without bogging down. The 15-amp motor is robust. It came with a stand and infeed/outfeed tables. A fantastic machine.
It's easy to use and very accurate. I've planed a bunch of reclaimed wood.
Huge upgrade.
My husband is a hobbyist woodworker, and he's been eyeing this planer for months. I finally got it for his birthday. He says the finish is incredible. The knives are sharp and the feed rate is perfect. It's a bit loud, but it's a planer, after all. It's worth every penny.
Good machine. It's heavy, but it works well.
Very good.
This planer is a beast. It flattens rough lumber in seconds. Very satisfied.
I've used planers at work, and this one matches the quality of industrial models. The surface finish is smooth without tearing. The two speeds allow me to adjust for hard woods. The tables are sturdy and align well. It's a bit pricey, but it's a professional tool. If you're serious about woodworking, this is the one.
Superb planer.
Great planer. The knives are sharp. I use it almost daily.
