The DEWALT DWE6423 5-Inch Variable-Speed Random Orbit Sander is a workhorse for finishing work in the shop or on the jobsite. With a 3-amp motor and variable speed from 8,000 to 12,000 OPM, it’s comfortable to control whether you’re stripping paint or fine-sanding before stain.
The separate counterweight in this sander offsets the pad’s rotation and reduces vibration at the handle. That means less hand fatigue during a long session and a smoother finish because you’re not fighting the tool. The rubber overmold grip covers the areas you actually hold, and the low-profile height puts your hand closer to the work surface, helping you feather edges and follow contours with more precision.
Over time, the hook-and-loop pad wears out or loses its grip. The DWE6423 uses an 8-hole pad that’s replaceable. To remove the old pad, first unplug the sander. If the pad is stuck, turn the sander upside down and gently tap the pad with a rubber mallet to break the hook-and-loop bond. Use a wrench to loosen the center bolt that connects the pad to the backing pad, then pull the pad off. Align the new DWE64233 pad with the holes in the backing pad, tighten the bolt, and you’re ready to sand. A stuck pad can also happen if dust has collected under the edge; a quick blast of air around the perimeter helps separate it.
The one-handed locking dust bag attaches securely without needing two hands to twist or clip it. If you want even better dust pickup, the integrated dust port connects directly to the DEWALT DWV010 or DWV012 dust collectors. For shop vacuums with a 1-1/4-inch hose, the DWV9000 Universal Quick Connector makes the fit simple.
The dust-sealed switch protects the trigger from the fine dust that normally kills sanders. All you need for most jobs is a 5-inch sanding disc and a reliable sander—this one gives you both power and long service life.
For DIY furniture makers, carpenters, and contractors, the DWE6423 is a dependable choice that won’t leave you with numb hands or a dusty motor.

Orbital sanders are tough on hands. The DWE6423's separate counterweight cancels out the eccentric motion that causes vibration, so you can work longer without the tingle and fatigue that come from an unbalanced sander. This is particularly useful when you're sanding large surfaces like table tops, doors, or drywall compound.
Start with a coarse grit (80-100) for paint or varnish removal, move to 120-150 for smoothing, and finish with 180-220 before stain or paint. The variable-speed dial lets you reduce the pad speed for softer woods and increase it for rapid stock removal.
The locking dust bag is fine for small jobs, but if you value a clean work area, connect the sander to a shop vac or dust collector. The DWE6423's port fits the DEWALT DWV010 and DWV012 directly, and the DWV9000 adapter makes it compatible with other 1-1/4-inch hose systems. You'll see the difference in both air quality and the final finish.
Unplug the sander, remove the dust bag, and tap the pad with a rubber mallet if it's stuck. Use a wrench to loosen the center bolt, remove the old pad, align the new DWE64233 pad, and tighten the bolt. Always ensure the pad is fully seated before use.
The backing pad is the metal plate beneath the hook-and-loop pad; the hook-and-loop pad is the replaceable part. Remove the hook-and-loop pad by loosening the center bolt. If you need to remove the entire backing pad, that requires disassembling the sander—refer to the manual for service instructions.
Fine dust often builds up under the edge of the pad and acts like a glue. Turn the sander upside down and tap the pad with a rubber mallet to break the seal. If that doesn't work, slide a thin scraper between the pad and backing plate to release it.
Yes, the dust port is 1-1/4 inch. Use the DEWALT DWV9000 Universal Quick Connector to adapt to other vacuum hoses.
The 5-inch, 8-hole hook-and-loop discs fit. Many brands make these; just look for 5" 8-hole random orbit discs.

Good sander.
Nice sander, but it vibrates a bit. The dust collection works well. It does a good job.
I've been a woodworker for over 30 years, and this is one of the best sanders I've used. The variable speed gives me great control, and the low-profile body makes it easy to get into tight spots. The dust collection is excellent, even with my shop vac. It runs smoothly with minimal vibration, which was a nice surprise. The only complaint is the cord could be longer, but that's minor. Overall, a solid performer.
Vibration is low.
It sands well and the dust bag actually collects dust. The switch is sealed, which is good. I like it.
I bought this to replace an old sander. The difference is night and day. This sander is much smoother and quieter. The variable speed is handy for different materials. I've used it on oak and walnut, and the finish is excellent. The dust collection keeps the area clean. My hand doesn't go numb anymore. Very happy with the purchase.
Good sander for the price. The hook-and-loop pad holds the paper well. It does the job.
I'm a hobbyist and I use this for furniture refinishing. The variable speed is great for different grits. It's comfortable to hold for extended periods. The dust collection is better than I expected. The only issue is that the paper punches don't align perfectly sometimes, but it's not a big deal. I would recommend it.
Works as intended.
This sander is very easy to control. The speed dial is convenient. I just wish it came with a few extra sanding discs.
I do home renovations. This sander has held up well on multiple jobs. The dust-sealed switch is a great feature, no more clogging. The low profile helps in tight corners. The 3-amp motor is powerful enough for any task. It's a bit heavy but not bad. Overall, a reliable tool.
Great finish.
