For a DWE6421K sanding pad change, stop the sander and remove the pad screw, then pull the old pad off. Clean the backing plate before attaching a new hook-and-loop pad. The DWE6421K is an excellent entry point into random orbit sanding. It delivers the same smooth, swirl-free finish you expect from a 5-inch sander, but with an easier footprint and less vibration than many older designs. The low-profile body is a big plus for overhead work and sanding against cabinets or other fixed surfaces.
For stock removal, use 60- or 80-grit discs. For final finish on wood, go to 120- and 220-grit. The hook-and-loop backing pad lets you switch discs in seconds, and the 8-hole dust pattern keeps the work surface cleaner than standard punched paper. Always use quality discs to avoid premature pad wear.
This sander gives you two good options: the included locking dust bag for portability, or a direct connection to a DWV010/DWV012 collector. For shop-vac users, the DWV9000 quick connector is the missing piece. Good dust collection not only keeps your work area clean, it also prevents sanding dust from loading the pad and cutting down the finish.
Unplug the sander, lay it on its side, and remove the center screw from the hook-and-loop pad. Pull the old pad straight off, clean the backing plate, then press and screw the new pad into place. Torque specs are in the manual.
